Chevy Valve Cover Coil Box

Finding a kool way to mount unsightly coils has always been a challenging project. Years back I would simply use a Finch box and mount the coils with the rest of the electrics on top of the motor. But.. I soon tired of that. I like having that area uncluttered and would rather use something more than a big chrome box slapped on top of the motor. Granted thats the easiest solution, but... easiest is rarely the koolest..lolol.

I use factory type 750 coils most of the time, even when I use the DynaS ignition. I favor these because they are the smallest coils I have come across to hide in a small area. True they are only 5 ohm resistance type coils, but they will function well with the electronic ignitions. They just don't offer the maximum performance standards the EI require. Having said that, my builds aren't generally of the super high performance nature, but more of the custom, yet dependable school of thought. One way I've come across to house these coils is to use the end of a small block Chevy valve cover as a lid and a base to make the rest of the box match.

The base of this really has to be tailored to fit the front down tubes of your frame, so each application can be totally different. The one I have pictured below is for a Cycle One single down tube frame for a SOHC 750 Honda. When you make these you can come up with many types of mounts for the lid.. What I've done with this particular one, is to have the top of it catch on a lip of the base and use small springs to attach it at the bottom, hence those small holes on the bottom edge. If you take the time to make sure there is enough of a lip at the top, this scenario will work and the springs will appear to be hidden.
